letter to self.

dear amanda,
what the crap!? you're one year older!! you spent the last year going at full light speed, while taking time to learn and grow. i would consider this a momentous year for you. one that has given you MUCH to think about and to be grateful for. next year, when you're one year older and wiser too, read this letter again and add to it! here are some of the things you learned:

you learned that being cultured is good. sometimes it's a uncomfortable to go out of your comfort zone, but it requires you to think outside YOUR world and understand everyone else's world. it allows you to be in the world but not of the world. it gives you the opportunity to try new things...

                                                                                                                        no matter how stinky....
and it allows you to interact with people you wouldn't have otherwise...

you were apprehensive at times to travel to certain places and have certain experiences, but you don't regret a thing (EXCEPT for eating that chicken in peru and thinking the devil was living in your bowels AND touching that goat and then rubbing your eye in jamaica. your eyes turned into vampire eyes and it was disgusting).

you learned that that people you love the most are the ones you should show appreciation for the most. you learned that relationships with family come first and foremost, as they are the ones that last the longest. get it together and call them more often! love them individually! (p.s. you have a hilarious family! don't forget to laugh with them!)

it only took you 2 years to fully understand this, but marriage ebbs and flows. some days it's good.. some days it's just plain annoying... haha but this was the year you [finally] understood that it's always going to be like that and it's okay! it's totally worth it and you have a REALLY good husband (in fact, he's too good for you). treat him with respect! you stopped packing school lunches for him - girl, LAZY! get it together and start making them again (your school starts at 10am. if you can't get it done, somethings wrong).

you learned to stop being fake friends with everyone you meet. you got pretty good at that! but you decided that the effort is better spent building relationships with people that really matter- people that you actually genuinely like! you learned to make time to make memories with lots of different friends. it's good to have friends, especially girl friends! you can't depend on your husband to spot you a tampon some girl products. but if you have girl friends, you can!

you learned that life doesn't always go as planned. in fact, it almost never does. 5 years ago you wanted to be married, living in utah with a nursing degree by now. you've only accomplished only one of those things- well done! hahahah! life changes! but that's what makes it fun! you've only changed your major 4 times by now.... but i'm sure you'll soon find the right one! right now you're thinking art history as a major.... is this the winner, future amanda??? :)

you also finally got your body together and decided to live healthier! you started yoga (it's about time), you got together your eating habits and you got your husband on the waggon too! now you're living a healthier, more energetic life! you also started wearing less make-up and bought sunscreen. hahahaha how did it feel becoming a grown-up and buying your first bottle of sunscreen????

lastly, you've also learned, what i consider to be one of the most important life lessons: to put others before yourself. there were 3 distinct times this past year when you felt an overwhelming sense of compassion and charity for someone you didn't know. act on those feelings more often! give to charities! volunteer! have more times of deep humility where you can allow your spirit to grow.

it doesn't seem like all that much now, but all these things were the foundation of a good year for you. you've always been a little more mature for your age, but this year you finally caught up with that maturity. could it be that you're finally coming into adulthood????? (shhhh, that was supposed to happen when you turned 18)

just for fun, i will predict what your life will be like in a year from now. but like i said earlier, nothing is for sure! so let's keep it all up in the air, k??:

you'll be living in new york, in a small little apartment on the upper west or east side (maybe even brooklyn [look into it]). secret will be enjoying his job in the finance world. maybe you'll be preggers?? idk about having a baby already (that means you'd have to start thinking about that like right now...), so maybe just pregnant? you'll maybe have joined a yoga group somewhere and between yoga classes you'll be volunteering somewhere. oooh, maybe you'll be taking an art history class (assuming you continue loving art history). and on tuesdays you'll still be watching new girl because you'll never stop loving new girl. and you'll be content with your life.

complete shot in the dark. but time will tell! until next year, keep it together girl!
